Take notes from paragraphs 2 – 5 of input 4, prozac issues. Your notes should look like the example notes that we completed in class. But you should also include the source of the notes. (Source = the title of the text that the notes come from).

    (paragraph 2):
major fraquently discussed Kramer one of them:effect of prozac;rob us what uniquely human:anxiety, guilt, shame, grief, self-sonsciousness(Kramer p.299)this feelings are negative-source of depression but we human without these feelings?we have to experience these moods some point our life why some people exempt these feelings?if these feelings dominate patients then it can justification in treating prozac.it is cruel to experience negative feelings all life.
    (paragraph 3):
lots of people don’t meet prozac and try to sove their problem own.If they can solve it without prozac then they don’t need to prescribed for prozac but if problems dominating their life then they need to get prozac.
    (paragraph 4):
prozac make user dependet because they feel like normal human just like people around them.but when they taken off medication they turn back their problem again.
    (paragraph 5):
prozac power undermines the psychotherapy.but if psychotherapy can help to petience then they must not take prozac.prozac is an addiction because of peoples envy for normal life that they deserved.

Hi Cem, you focused on key parts of the text: good work. Just one point: your notes don’t look like notes. Try to use separate lines for new ideas.

    Second paragraph:

Main Idea: Prozac should be used in treating patients if their negative feelings are dominating their life.

Negative feelings are the source of many cases of depression.
We all have to experience these moods at some point in our life.

    Questions to be examined:

-Are we even human without negative feelings?
-Why should some people be exempt from negative feelings?

    Third paragraph:

Main Idea: People use Prozac to rehabilitee themselves even their case is not defined as psychiatric disorder.

Despite hundreds of defined psychiatric disorders, there are still those who do not meet the definitions yet seek Prozac to solve problems of their own.

The problem is that many people without disorders complain about problems, yet they have to deal with them without the help of medication. However, for someone as compulsive as Julia, Prozac dramatically helped her situation which she deserved.

    Questions to be examined:

-Is it ethical to prescribe Prozac to these people?

    Fourth paragraph:

Main Idea: Prozac makes patients dependent but anyway patients feel themselves normal just like the many people they face every day.

When on medication, the patients learned to deal with their problems in a way that made them feel normal.

The patients were dependent upon Prozac to allow them to feel like any other normal human.

    Fifth paragraph:

Main Idea: Prozac is so powerful undermines the power of psychotherapy.

Not all patients should resort to Prozac because if psychotherapy is indeed capable of curing depression among patients, then that is the best way to overcome their problems.

Prozac is an addiction to the life patients always dreamed about and envied, while watching others.
Prozac is an addiction to the life patients deserve to live.

Hi Gizem, I liked the organisation of your notes and the content. Great work! Now you need to try to use short forms (abbrieviations) and symbols.

Second paragraph: humanbeing have some feelings like anxiety, guilt, shame, grief and self-consciousness.and these looks like negative but they are necessary for our life.we all have to experience these moods.

Third paragraph:at this paragraph writer mention about “is it ethical to prescribe prozac?”and he discuss about julia.the prozac encouraged traits that helped julia’s live a happier life with her family.

Fourth paragraph:patients were taken off medication they felt like themselves.because they learned to deal with their problems and they feel like any other normal human.

Fifth paragraph:Prozac is so powerful undermines the power of psychotherapy.therefore some people left their minds scared and distorted deserve to overcome their scars.prozac is an addiction to the life they deserve to live.
Hi Suleyman, your notetaking style is a little different to mine but I like it. You have given a summary of the paragraphs in your own words. I think you were especially successful with paragraphs 2-4. Unfortunately paragraph 5 is not clear.

  4. berivanbrknon 10 Oct 2010 at 4:23 pm

    second paragraph:
people have some unique feelings such as anxiety, guilt, grief that source of many cases of depression but all of these moods at same point in peoples life.

    third paragraph:
writer interrogated moral of prozac that is ethic for all psychiatric disorder.he also give an example that is about julia who didnt quite meet the criteria of OCD.by taking prozac julia became more happier.when she had been taken off that medicine she returned her previous habits.so prozac helped someone as compulsive as julia

    fourth paragraph:
in kramer’s book he talks about his patients were taken off prozac they dont feel like themselves.they felt like normal people when on medication.they thought how they had felt on medication in a normal state of mind and thereby they were dependent upon prozac to allow them feel normal.

    fifth paragraph:
prozac undermine the psychotherapy.if the prozac is solution of their mental problems it may mean a lifetime of medication.so its not addiction to drug, its addiction to the life they deserve to live.

Hi Berivan, like S├╝leyman you have made summaries of the paragraphs. This is a different style but it is also good. It is best when you try to do it in your own words, rather than taking too many chunks from the text.

    Second Paragraph:
Kramer discussed a major concern frequenty which was effect of Prozac”rob us of what is uniquely human:anxiety, quilt, shame, grief, self-consciousness”(Kramer p. 299). These feelings are source of depression and negative. However, are we human without having these feelings? It is cruel for people who have to experience these negative feelings in their life.

    Third Paragraph:
There are still people who do not know the definitions yet seek Prozac to solve problems of their own. Is it ethical to prescribe Prozac? For example Julia did not meet the criteria for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Prozac helped her to live a happier life. But when Julia stoped getting Prozac, she returned her previous life. The major problem is people complain about problems without disorders. They have to deal with problems wiithout help of medication.

    Fourth Paragraph:
Kramer discusses about his patients were taken off prozac they dont feel like themselves. When on medication they felt like a normal person that surround them. The patients were dependent upon Prozac to allow them feel normal people.

    Fifth Paragraph:
Prozac is powerful undermines power of psychotheraphy. If Prozac is solution of mental problems, it may mean a lifetime of medication. It is an addiction to life that they dreamed, life they deserve to live.

Hi B├Ârte├žine, you also made summaries of the paragraphs, rather than writing notes. This is also a good technique to use. However, you should try to use your own words rather than taking chunks from the text. Using your own words will help you to understand the text more deeply.

The text ?Prozac Issues? discusses the necessity of taking Prozac to avoid depression. All human beings have right to live happily just like all other people around them, but there should be a moral line because without these bad feelings how can we call ourselves as human-beings.

Paragraph-2. Kramer discusses the effect of Prozac by saying: ?rob us of what is uniquely human: anxiety, guilt, shame, grief, self-consciousness? (Kramer p.299) We are all human and we also have to feel depressed in some points of our lives but it is cruel to let someone feel like this for a lifetime.

Paragraph-3. Although some people can overcome depression without any help, some cannot. But there are also some people (like Julia) who weren?t diagnosed depressed but took medicine and feel better.

Paragraph-4. In Kramer?s book, it says after patients were taken off medication they don?t feel like themselves anymore. The reason for this is because their ?definition of self? changes.

Paragraph-5. There are some other ways of controlling depression before medication. Such as psychotheraphy. But if this doesn?t work then patients should take medicine. Although it may be called drug addiction, in fact it is an addicition to the life they want to live and deserve.

Hi O─čuzhan. You too have written summaries of the paragraphs. This is another good way of reminding yourself of the important information in a text. You have made excellent summaries. Great work!

    Second paragraph:

People have unique feelingslike anxienty, guilty, shame, grief, self-consciousness and these feelings are negative and even the sourceof many cases of depression, but are we even human without these feelings ? Prozac is a medicine for treating people’s brain. ─▒t can be morally wrong for one to have to experience thes feelings are all moments in our life

    Third paragraph:

Many people don?t meet prozac and try to solve their problem own. They are thinking ? Is it ethic to prescribe prozac.? Writer gave example about julia and the effects of lifes. Prozac encouraged traits that helped her live a happier life with her family and able to worry less about everything. Prozac improved her life by allowing her to ease her compulsiveness, creating healthier relationships with the ones close to her.

    Fourt paragraph:

In Kramer?s book, he discusses several cases in which after his patients wer e taken off medication they no longer felt like themselves. That is when on medication the patients learned to deal with their problems in a way that made them feel normal. They changd their definition of self. They had felt on medication in a normal state of mind. Th epatient swere dependent upon prozac to allow them to feel like any other normal human.

    Fifth paragraph:

Prozac is so powerful undermines the power of psychotherapy. Not all patients should resort to prozac because ─▒f psychotherapy is indeed capable of curing depression among patients, then that is the besy way to overcome theit problems. Prozac is the answer to their problems and it may mean a lifetime of medication so its not addiction to drug, its addiction to the life they deserve to live.

Hi Mert, you too made summaries of the paragraphs. Good work. This is another good way of remembering the important information in a text. However, you should write it in your own words, rather than taking too many long chunks from the text.

Hi Baran. You tried to summarise most of the paragraphs in your own words. Good work. This is another good way to remember the important information from the text. But, be careful – you should always try to have the same meaning as the text. In your case the first sentence has the opposite meaning to the text.

    Hi Everyone,

Very good work with the notes. It was not an easy text to deal with and you made very good attempts.

One important point I would like to remind you about is that you should include the title of the text that you took the notes from and the date that you took the notes.

I have put a sample of my notes in the posts. Please have a look at it and compare it to your notes.
