Teşvikiye Project

Teşvikiye Project
a
This project comprises an oral history study in the neighborhood of Teşvikiye in Istanbul. Teşvikiye developed as a neighborhood for the Ottoman elite, including members of the royal family and state administrators. Teşvikiye was one of the first Muslim neighborhoods in Istanbul to create a local version of an alafranga or Westernized way of life. For this project, which was supported by an Internal Research Grant from Sabancı University, women and men from different social backgrounds, professions and generations were interviewed in Teşvikiye.
