A Vocabulary Contest for the Upper Intermediate Students
A vocabulary contest for the upper intermediate students
Jacqueline Einer and Reyhan Salatacı organized a vocabulary contest for the upper intermediate students, which took place in the Cinema Hall on April 9. The aim was to have the students revise vocabulary in a fun way before the midterm exam. The original idea to design a competition came from a student (Duygu Koç, a member of the winning team) from Section 7. The words were selected from the first five units of Beyond the Boundaries Level 3-Book 1. Twenty-one contestants from seven upper sections and three students from two repeat sections participated in the contest. The contestants had been elected by their classmates through voting.
There were three rounds in total. In the first round four classes competed and in the second round the remaining four classes competed . In the third and final round, there were two sections left, namely Section 5 and Section 7. In each round, there were twelve questions consisting of three definitions, three word forms, three multiple choice and three collocations. The questions were read to the students twice. They wrote their answers down on an A4 paper and held it up to the audience. The class teachers were appointed as adjudicators. Jacqueline was the host of the show, Ekrem the score keeper and Reyhan the bell-ringer!
The winners were Duygu Koç, Gamze Tillem and Burak Yalçıntaş from Section 7. They received a copy of the Longman Dictionary.
The runners-up were Orhan Varol, Cem Könsül and Esra Çetiner from Section and they were given copies of Jared Diamond’s Guns, Germs and Steel.
We thought it was fun and exciting in general. We hope to continue such interclass activities……. [video]
