Fifteen-minute fixes: The OLSP-Curriculum mini-workshops

Last month the OLSP and Curriculum teams set out on a mission to spread their knowledge among the teachers of the School of Languages. We realised that among the members of our two teams we were using a variety of software and online tools in our day-to-day teaching and that it would be great to share our practices with the rest of our colleagues.

Workshop 1: How to download video clips to your laptop

So, on 21st December our first collaborative workshop looked at a couple of ways in which you can download video clips to your laptop. The aim of this workshop was to introduce two downloadable pieces of software, Clipta and Freecorder, for saving YouTube (and other) video clips, to offer some troubleshooting advice for new users and to show how such resources, in terms of how they supplement course materials, are relevant to the curriculum.

Further details and the handouts for the workshop are available on the OLSP digest blog here.

Workshop 2: Software and websites for graphically organizing ideas

On 28th December our second mini-workshop focused on software and websites for graphically organizing ideas. This workshop showcased two tools that can be used to help students graphically organise their ideas. Firstly, a freely downloadable mind map tool, XMind, was presented, with indications as to how this might be used by students in their writing assignments. Secondly, an online tool for generating ideas, Wonder Wheel, was shown.

Again, further details and the handouts for the workshop are available on the OLSP digest blog.

Future Workshops

In addition to increasing the collaboration between The OLSP and Curriculum teams, we are enjoying presenting useful tools that our colleagues can immediately implement into their daily teaching practices. We plan to deliver further workshops to School of Languages instructors on a regular basis, as well as offering repeat sessions for all those instructors who couldn?t make it the first time round.
