ACCTING

AdvanCing behavioural Change Through an INclusive Green Deal (2022-2025)

Project Team: Ayşe Gül Altınay (PI and Researcher), Burcu Borhan Türeli (Project Specialist and Researcher), Esin Düzel (Project Specialist and Researcher)

Launched in February 2022 and run by a multi-disciplinary and multi-sector consortium composed of 12 research institutions from 11 countries, EU Horizon 2020 ACCTING (AdvanCing behavioural Change Through an INclusive Green Deal) conducts research in the EU and surrounding countries, as well as in countries such as the USA, Brazil, and Japan. ACCTING has two main goals: 1) investigating the local, national, and supra-national impact of theclimate crisis andenvironmental policies, most notably the European Green Deal, on social inequalities from a gender+ perspective, and 2) developing solutions and policy recommendations for civic actors and policy-makers based on the analysis of the “better stories” (Dina Georgis) of inclusive climate transformations developed by bottom-up initiatives and the organization of co-creative design processes.  and using them to develop solutions to be used by social actors and policymakers.

What are the factors that impede behavioural changes that may respond to the climate crisis and what processes encourage and support such changes? What do we see when we explore these factors that impede or facilitate the intended transformations through a gender+ perspective? Which social groups are made (more) vulnerable as a result of the climate crisis and environmental policies that respond to it? How can such policies, and more specifically the European Green Deal, be designed and implemented in a more inclusive way? In seeking answers to these questions, ACCTING focuses on the experiences of groups that are (made) vulnerable (especially women, youth, minorities, migrants, locals, nomads, and LGBTQI+s), as well as the inspiring initiatives and transformation led by them. Building upon the previous research in this field, ACCTING offers a conceptual and methodological framework that consists of co-creation and transdisciplinarity. We as the SUGender team, will be conducting research in four of the eight thematic subfields: disasters, biodiversity, food security, and food values. In the current cycle of the research process, we are engaged in mapping the existing bottom-up initiatives, organizations and groups that work in these fields as well as researching the impact of the climate crisis and environmental policies on social inequalities. In order to access more detailed information on the project and the eight research fields, you can visit the project website.

The 4 Research Lines we are engaged in:

  1. Valorising local knowledge on natural hazards
  2. Biodiversity and land use restriction
  3. Food security & healthy diets
  4. Food values
