Course Selection

While this post is mainly for Sabanci students, it may also apply to other students.

I get a lot of questions as to which courses to take, especially in the sophomore year. After reading the information in cs.sabanciuniv.edu, I would also add the following (my personal opinions):

  1. You should balance your course load so that you don’t take many ‘similarly difficult’ courses at once in one semester. For instance, you could take CS201, Math201, Math203 one term and CS204, CS210 and Math204 the next term, rather than taking all 3 math courses at once. A good strategy would be to balance the workloads by having courses from different fields (i.e. taking some courses with programming assignments together with courses with reading assignments).
  2. You should pay attention to course codes (CS3xx, CS4xx etc) which generally indicate the intended level of the course. So, in general, you should not take a 4xx coded course in your second year.
  3. You should take courses that will be useful for your career (e.g. signals if you will do computer vision), but you should also only take courses that you will like and/or that will be useful for your career, preferably both (sometimes I see students taking a course just because its schedule is right or because of its science credit, without really being interested in that course – see next item also).
  4. If you are working part-time, you may over-emphasize course schedules  (not taking a course because it means you need to come to school another day). While gaining work experience is and earning some salary is good, make sure not to sacrifice your education.
  5. Do not overload in an attempt to raise your GPA, it often has a reverse effect. Instead, try to use summer options (you may be able to take courses at other institutions but only with pre-approval and limitations) as a financially wise alternative. It is better if you extend your studies by 1-2 summers or at the worst one term, rather than dealing with below 2.0 GPA for a long time.
  6. If you are going for an exchange term, plan to take courses in the areas the university is strong or maybe a course that we do not have at SU. But if getting to know a new culture is the main reason, then do as above but also do not overload.
  7. Use the Degree Evaluation form in Banner Web to check your graduation requirements, starting from your 3rd year.

I will add more bullets here as I am asked more questions. Have a good term!
