Sabancı University Writing Center is a unit of The Center for Individual and Academic Development [CIAD], which is comprised of five units that aim at assisting and encouraging Sabancı University students to strengthen their personal and academic skills. The other four units of CIAD that the Writing Center works with in close cooperation and collaboration are: Academic Support, Tutorial, Civic Involvement Projects, and Individual Counselling.
The Writing Center creates a learning environment in which students can work to attain the highest possible level of written English. The Center?s goal is to provide guidance, assistance, and reinforcement to students for competence in academic discourse. The Writing Center faculty fulfils this aim by organizing a wide range of workshops and tutorials as well as individual support assisted by peer tutors.
All Sabancı University students are provided guidance and assistance at any stage in the writing process. A tutor can help a student in a variety of ways: to brainstorm or conceive an idea at the concept stage of a paper; to improve the structure and focus of a written piece at the early draft stage; and to assist in further revisions or final editing.
Interactive workshop series provide an overview of the techniques of the composing and editing processes and the rhetorical modes with ample support materials as models or guidelines at different levels of sophistication. Writing tutorials focus on the specific individual needs or interests of students. By creating interest for writing and establishing the notion of writing as a discipline, the Writing Center tries to encourage Sabancı University students to develop as expressive, analytical, critical, and persuasive writers.
