Volkan Patoglu graduated with a B.Sc. degree from the Middle East Technical University, Ankara, Turkey in 1999. He received M.Sc. degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering – Systems in 2000 and 2002, respectively, from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. He also received his Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor in May 2005. He worked as a post-doctoral research fellow in Haptix Laboratory at the University of Michigan and as a post-doctoral research associate in Mechatronics and Haptic Interfaces Laboratory at Rice University. Currently, he is a full professor at Sabanci University.

His research is in the area of physical human-robot interaction, in particular, design and control of force-feedback exoskeletons with applications to physical rehabilitation, human augmentation, and skill training. His research extends to cognitive robotics.

Dr. Patoglu has been honored with Career Award by the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (2008), Young Scientist Award by Science Academy (2015), Meritorious Service Award by IEEE Transactions of Haptics (2011), Outstanding Associate Editor Award by IEEE Transactions of Haptics (2013-2018), and Outstanding Associate Editor Award by IEEE Robotics and Automation Letters (2015-2019).

Dr. Patoglu has served as an Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Haptics (2013-2018). Currently, he serves as an Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Neural Systems & Rehabilitation Engineering and IEEE Robotics and Automation Letters.
